It's not perfect by any means, but the music is wonderful, the direction is superb, and there is so much going on onscreen that it is impossible to be bored. It helps to have a fascination with the brilliantly mundane, which was Altman's forte.
The film was most certainly not a bomb though. It was the third highest grossing film of 1980. Reviews were generally positive. My entire family and many of my friends loved it and I still watch the movie (now with my daughter) every few years. Movie snobs, who tend to prefer Altman's more pretentious films, are probably a big part of the reason its reputation has changed. They have absolute conniption fits when Popeye is mentioned.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17465614142381057430noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12690266.post-49856881302350102452007-09-26T01:09:00.000-04:002007-09-26T01:09:00.000-04:00Thanks!Thanks!Noel Verahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05904212081036547668noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12690266.post-53595430412475885452007-09-25T11:38:00.000-04:002007-09-25T11:38:00.000-04:00Great critique of a long unappreciated movie!Great critique of a long unappreciated movie!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12690266.post-23558571163022459272007-09-23T01:31:00.000-04:002007-09-23T01:31:00.000-04:00Hi, alsa, sent you an email reply but chances are ...Hi, alsa, sent you an email reply but chances are it's in your spam folder. Although when I first saw Popeye (on a laserdisc , I think), I actually enjoyed it, although everyone I knew didn't so I just kept my mouth shut. Williams, was born to play the role, I always thought. If Hoffman played it, it'd plunk down to this range of familiar characters Hoffman likes to play.

I'm tired of Hoffman, I suppose; I just can't see him as playing some ordinary person anymore, though I did like him in I Heart Huckabees. I suppose he can still surprise us, I'm just not holding my breath.

Radner I'm not too familiar with; Tomlin would've been interesting, though can we make her unexpectedly gorgeous the way Duvall was in at least two moments? Maybe, maybe.Noel Verahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05904212081036547668noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12690266.post-29784253027669482782007-09-20T00:55:00.000-04:002007-09-20T00:55:00.000-04:00Did you know that Dustin Hoffman was the original ...Did you know that Dustin Hoffman was the original choice to play Popeye? He did a lot of dance training for the role before he left due to creative differences with Feiffer.

Makes me wonder what the film would still turn out if Hoffman and either Gilda Radner or Lily Tomlin were to play the main roles. But then again, Olive Oyl was the role Shelley Duvall was born to play.Patrickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02132309436992915620noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12690266.post-10704133306617671782007-09-19T20:48:00.000-04:002007-09-19T20:48:00.000-04:00No, you're fine, I'm just kidding. You've suggested (and I wholeheartedly agree) that Altman's efforts make for worthwhile viewing and there are some rich rewards to be taken from POPEYE.

BravoAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
