In terms of emotional impact, his 'Girl in the Fireplace' in particular ain't chopped liver.

Time travle stories usually have their share of paradoxes; Girl Who Leapt had a little more than most. Agree, the characters are endearing--watched it with someone who loved it so much she watched it again, but even she couldn't help pointing out the plot holes.Noel Verahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05904212081036547668noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12690266.post-26129095754339911952008-07-17T23:37:00.000-04:002008-07-17T23:37:00.000-04:00Steven Moffat (as in the Dr. Who writer)?Actually ...Steven Moffat (as in the Dr. Who writer)?

Actually my main reason for loving GWLTT was not the structure, but the characters (esp. the heroine) and the overall quality of the art work. My complete text this Friday will have a longer appreciation of his works, and how they play with linear narratives, in some ways a more sophisticated, inventive manner than this film does.Noel Verahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05904212081036547668noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12690266.post-34312318009875435672008-07-15T08:49:00.000-04:002008-07-15T08:49:00.000-04:00> Linda Linda Linda over Kurosawa Kyoshi? > That b...> Linda Linda Linda over Kurosawa Kyoshi?
> That better be a damned good movie..

Depends on what you think about asweet, gentle Ozu-esque (or more properly Shimizu-esque) film about 4 school girls getting ready to perform punk rock covers (of songs by the late great Blue Hearts) at their annual school festival. Although the whole cast is wonderful, Bae Doo-na (as a Korean exchange student) is extraordinary (as usual). This was a very expensive discovery. Not only did we buy the unsubbed Japanese DVD and the later subbed US onem we also had to get the soundtrack CD, multiple CDs of The Blue Hearts, multiple CDs of Base Ball Bear (the real band of the bass player in the film) and various other odds and ends. Some pictures (etc.):

http://rozmon.blogspot.com/2007/01/watched-january-15-21-2007.html

Being forewarned, some people have found this dull -- as nothing goes on in the film but everyday life. ;~}Michael E. So -- I would probably prefer this year's schedule.

Canary features a return to the screen (after many decades) of one of Ozu's stars from the silent era -- Yukiko Inoue (who retired -- in her 20s -- in 1935 or so). Inoue only plays a supporting role, but it is still nice to see her. Sadly all her Ozu films are lost (but there are Naruse, Gosho and Shimizu films that survive).Michael E. I actually like Girl Who Leapt Through Time MORE than Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle (which I do like, mind you).

This is a lot better than the first live-action version as well (haven't seen any of the others).
